For its 2008 Fall collection, designer Nicolas Chesquière of Balenciaga Fashions included colorful fashion items made from latex!
According to designer Nicolas Chesquière, there is a difference with the traditional fetish fashion. Chesquière reveals in an interview with The Indipendent: “I’m not saying I’m Stella McCartney or anything but, although it’s not seen that way, latex is, in fact, very noble because it comes from trees. It’s a natural texture… Usually, latex evokes sex and S&M but I didn’t want to say that at all.”
The latex garments are lined with silk on the inside so there is no direct contact between the latex and skin. The designer insists he wanted to go for that softer look, not a fetish one. Some pieces are even made from molten latex, like the biker jackets. The liquified latex was molded by hand, then left to cool, and then hand painted by artists to create the ultimate look. A number of other pieces are also molded, to give a special look once worn.
As with many “haute couture”, one needs to ask the question up to what point this fashion is considered ready to wear? Judging frmo these photos, we certainly know many people who’d be ready to wear that any day! Any volunteers?
